On March 8, Women’s College Hospital (WCH) and its partners proudly celebrated International Women’s Day (IWD) – a day to shine a light on the obstacles women around the world continue to face as we work together to advance gender equity and justice.
The WCH community paid tribute to IWD in a big way. From a series of in-hospital presentations by women’s health leaders to events hosted by WCH Foundation partners and champions, the day was filled with celebration, conversation and hope for a brighter future ahead.
Take a look at just a few of the ways in which WCH and its supporters honoured IWD 2018.
WCH draws attention to women’s health issues with a series of inspiring speakers
Throughout the morning, WCH hosted a series of speakers who presented on a wide range of topics related to health for women. Highlights included a look at the health impacts of systemic racism, an exploration of global population health interventions for women, an in-depth exploration of Indigenous women’s rights and health, and much more.
Over the lunch hour, the hospital was proud to welcome Chika Stacy Oriuwa for a keynote presentation in the auditorium of the C.L. Burton Conference Centre. The only Black medical student in her class at the University of Toronto, Chika presented a powerful spoken word performance that she wrote for WCH and spoke about the obstacles she faced on her path to medicine – and her efforts to encourage young Black girls and women to pursue their dreams through both community and University-based initiatives.

WCH Foundation partner Dream Unlimited raises over $3,600 for WCH on IWD
On International Women’s Day, long-time partner, donor and WCH champion Dream Unlimited launched a special employee fundraising campaign in support of Women’s College Hospital. Through a dedicated fundraising website, promotion in their March newsletter, a booth in the lobby of one of their downtown office buildings and more, together the Dream community raised an incredible $3,600 and counting on IWD to help advance healthcare for women and their loved ones.
Michael J. Cooper, president and chief responsible officer of Dream, has generously offered to match all donations made in support of the campaign.
To the entire Dream team and Michael, thank you so much for your generosity, support and enduring partnership!
Rolling out the yoga mat for women’s health: YYoga donates proceeds to WCH on IWD
On March 8, yogis at YYoga’s Toronto studio downward dogged for a great cause! YYoga, a Vancouver-based yoga studio that recently opened two new locations in Toronto, donated all proceeds from drop-in classes at their Queen Street West location on International Women’s Day in support of Women’s College Hospital. Members of the WCH Foundation team were invited to host a booth in the tea room of the YYoga studio to chat with class attendees about the hospital and its impact.
YYoga’s initiative raised vital funds toward innovative programs and research at WCH. Thank you so much to the entire YYoga team and community!
RBC celebrates IWD with a thought-provoking discussion about the advancement of women
In honour of IWD, WCH champion and donor RBC hosted a panel of guests at TIFF Bell Lightbox for a thought-provoking discussion about the advancement of women and the work that lies ahead to continue pushing for gender equity in all facets of society. Members of the WCH Foundation team were proud to attend the event.
Through the discussion and a Q&A session with the audience, topics included the role that both men and women have to play in advocating for pay equity and career progression, how flexible workplaces can aid in retaining top talent by recognizing the need for work-life balance, the negative impact of unconscious bias in cultures and organizations, and much more.
To the entire Women’s College Hospital community and all of our incredible partners, donors and supporters, thank you for raising your voices on International Women’s Day! Together, we are advancing a brighter and healthier future for women and their loves ones everywhere. We are so grateful.
