Did you know that women are two times more likely to experience depression compared to men – yet three times more likely to experience barriers to accessing mental healthcare?
The Women’s Mental Health Program at Women’s College Hospital is focused on breaking down barriers to mental healthcare for women through innovative virtual care initiatives, on-site child care through Stella’s Playroom and groundbreaking research that strives to identify and close key gaps in care for women. The program is the largest of its kind in Canada, with focus areas that include mental health related to reproductive life stages, childhood trauma and medical conditions.
Your participation in the SHOPPERS LOVE. YOU. Run for Women will directly impact the lives of women like Naomi, who accessed life-changing mental healthcare at Women’s College Hospital after struggling with postpartum depression.
Kaeli Macdonald, a social worker and therapist with the Women’s Mental Health Program, says that ensuring women receive the appropriate care for their mental health concerns impacts not only patients but their entire families. “If care providers or family or friends don’t know the right questions to ask, they can often see a woman as seeming fine, looking like she has it all together when in fact she is struggling with severe depression or anxiety symptoms and not feeling at all well inside,” she says.
“Though we see primarily women in our program, the work they are doing to address their mental health is in fact helping and benefiting their children, their partners, their families.”
Your participation in the SHOPPERS LOVE. YOU. Run for Women will change countless lives.
Thank you so much for your support and we look forward to seeing you on June 8!
