This year, we were delighted to welcome The Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell
, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, and Toronto City Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam
as special guests, in addition many dedicated corporate, philanthropic and community leaders.
Held at the newly renovated Grand Ballroom in the Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, guests heard from three top WCH medical leaders who delivered engaging and inspiring “Women’s Talks” – TED Talk-style presentations showcasing WCH’s different areas of impact and expertise in the field of women’s cancers.
The speakers, who included Dr. Ruth Heisey
, chief of family and community medicine and medical director of the Peter Gilgan Centre for Women’s Cancers; Dr. David Urbach
, surgeon-in-chief; and Dr. Danielle Martin
, vice president, medical affairs and health system solutions, shared insights into the importance of knowing your family history, innovations in surgery emerging from WCH and a look at the work of the new Peter Gilgan Centre for Women’s Cancers – an unprecedented new collaboration between WCH and the Canadian Cancer Society.
In addition to the Women’s Talks, guests were also treated to a stunning performance by Juno Award winner and cancer survivor Simone Denny
and a spectacular fashion show unveiling a new collection by acclaimed Canadian fashion designer David Dixon
. Entitled Invincible Summer, the collection pays tribute to the strength and resilience of women facing cancer and the spirit of hope, care and compassion at WCH that supports them.
The collection also drew inspiration from a beautiful watercolour painting by Dr. John Semple, WCH surgeon and OCAD University-trained artist, which celebrates the extraordinary inner courage of women on a cancer journey. Together, David Dixon and Dr. John Semple
created an exquisite silk scarf depicting the watercolour painting, which was available for purchase by guests of Women for Women’s wishing to deepen their support of WCH.
Scarves are still available for purchase! To place your order today, please click here.
The incredible result of this year’s Women for Women’s showcases the power of community to save countless lives by transforming the landscape of research and care for women’s cancers on a national scale. We are deeply grateful to every guest, sponsor and supporter of Women for Women’s 2017 for helping to advance WCH’s mission to innovate and provide equitable access to healthcare for all. Thank you!
