February is Heart Month and Valentine’s Day is just around the corner! To celebrate, we’re honouring the courageous women who are strengthening their hearts as patients of WCH’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program. This year, the program marks 20 years of changing lives, thanks to your generous support. Inside this issue you’ll find stories of resilience, generosity and impact. There’s also a special gift for you straight from the heart of a grateful WCH patient.

Sue Williams

Sue Williams says the Cardiac Rehab Program gave her back her life. Several years ago, Sue was enjoying a family trip to England when she suddenly began experiencing the early signs of a heart attack. As she was rushed to the hospital, she entered full cardiac arrest and died for a brief moment before being resuscitated. After spending several weeks in hospital, Sue returned home and immediately enrolled in WCH’s Cardiac Rehab Program to begin her journey to recovery.

Closing gaps in mental healthcare for women and families
Simone Vigod

Women’s College Hospital is home to North America’s largest women’s mental health treatment and research program. We’re thrilled to share that a leading researcher with the program, Dr. Simone Vigod, has developed a new tool that can predict which patients are at high risk of being re-admitted to hospital after transitioning back into the community following in-patient care. This tool has the potential to transform the landscape of mental healthcare for women and families everywhere.

Bell Let's Talk= Yodie Sowunmi

Thank you for joining us to talk women’s mental health on Bell Let’s Talk Day! On January 27, WCH’s mental health team set up shop in the hospital’s main Atrium to chat with patients, staff and volunteers about topics such as postpartum depression, menopause, sexual abuse, trauma, grief and mental illness related to complex chronic conditions. Together, we engaged women and families in this important conversation and helped change lives. Thank you!

Yodie Sowunmi, 25, is a volunteer with Women’s College Hospital’s cardiology program. Every Monday, he checks in patients, helps coordinate tests and paperwork and provides support in any way he can. Reflecting on his experiences as a volunteer, Yodie says: “I’ve found that by helping other people, my own life has been enriched too.”
